If you love comedies and liked The 40 Year Old Virgin ,then do yourself a favor and go out of your way to watch this movie. It’s that damn good! Verdict:A hilarious movie well worth the purchase.BUY!!5/5stars
After an experimental bio-weapon is released, turning thousands into zombie-like creatures, it’s up to a rag-tag group of survivors to stop the infected and those behind its release.
Review:
Cherry Darling(Rose McGowan) a local Go Go dancer,El Wray(Freddy Rodriquez),and countless other people are trapped in a city over run by flesh eating zombies(are they considered zombies since they can talk??).
The story that unfolds is a gore filled , over the top action packed movie sprinkled with just the right amount of comedy. The second of the “Grindhouse” feature is the brainchild of Robert Rodriquez(Desperado).
The script is dead on,with great dialogue and a perfect cast.Planet Terror has toppled The Devil Rejects as my number one movie of all time. It’s a great experience form beginning to end. my only gripe is I wished it could have been a bit longer. If you are a fan of brutal, over the top action/horror movies then do yourself a favor and watch this movie asap. Verdict:Buy!!5/5stars
Film adaptation of the popular gaming franchise Hitman. Agent 47 , a clone and a hitman is hired by a group called “The Agency” and quickly thrust into a political conspiracy.
Review:
I hate to compare two different movies but this is similar to The Bourne Triology in the style it was shot and some of the action scenes. There’s more bloodshed that I would have figured . but I’m a sucker for blood and gore so its all good. Timothy Olyphant made a pretty good Agent 47 but I’m stilled bummed that Vin Diesel didn’t get the part.Overall its a great action movie , better than most game to movie adaptations. Some things were out of place in the film but not enough to detract my enjoyment.
Verdict: A very good game to film adaptation. if you like Bourne Supremacy movies then you’ll like this , so go out and BUY it. 4/5stars
A rebellious teen at a new school is lured into an underground fight club and finds that he has something to fight for.
Review
After starting a brawl, his mother things a change of scenery will do the family good and moves the family to Florida. Jake stumbles upon an underground mixed martial arts club ran by students at the new school. Jake will have to face his greatest threat and the past before he can truly be happy with himself. I’m a big mma junkie and its good to see a movie based around the sport in a way. While its not a homerun of a film it kept me interested and I’ll be getting the dvd once its released.
Verdict: If your fan of MMA or fighting movies then you should go out and RENT this. 3/5stars
I love horror movies. When I was younger I used to get nightmares just hearing the “Nightmare On Elm Street” theme. As I grew older , I shed that childish fear like a snake sheds it skin. Now I”ll watch any horror movie. I prefer Supernatural(paranomral) movies the most but for some reason it seems this type of horror movie is rarely made. Sure Amityville Horror(Original),House On Haunted Hill,Hell House and a few others were released, but unlike the other horror sub-genres it is a minority. Enough with the chit chat on to the list .
10. The Alien Quadrology(1979/1986/1992/1997)
First off I’d like to note that I don’t consider Alien vs. Predator part of the series. The original Alien(directed by Ridley Scott) is the the shining gem of the triology. The creature design by H. R. Giger is creepily outstanding and the subject of many of my nightmares around that time. The movie is packed with chilling scenes and clearly a true classic. The reason for this being so low on the list is because while the other movies in the franchise are good none were up to the standard of the first. Oh btw the face hugger is just an awesome concept for a creature. 9.Sleepaway Camp(1983/1988/1989) A nice place for a summer vacation. A perfect place to die!
Sleepaway camp is great gory fun. The story is simple , Angela Baker comes to live with her cousin Ricky and his mom Martha. Eight years later , Angela is painfully shy teenage girl. She and Ricky are sent to a summer camp and shortly things start to go wrong as people end up dead. Some of the death scenes are gorry and good . The most memorable moment of the whole series is the last scene in the original. I won’t ruin it for those that haven’t seen it but its a shocker! The other two movies in the series pretty standard but still worth a watch. It’s being reported that more films are expected for the franchise, hopefully they are better than some of the recent crop of horror movies. 8. (tie)Dog Soldiers(2002)
Six British Army soldiers begin a training mission in the Scottish Highlands when they stumble upon the brutalized remains of another military group who were doing the same exercise.A survivor of the previous group cryptical explains what attack his grouped while the guys come upon the realization that something is stalking them in the woods. It was released in the US straight to dvd. It’s tied with Ginger Snaps as my favorite werewolf movie. 8.(tie)Ginger Snaps(2000/2004/2004)
Ginger and Brigitte Fitzgerald are teenage sisters obsessed with death. Ginger, the oldest sister is attacked by The Beast of Bailey Downs and later that night her wounds start to miracoulously heal and the sisters knew that she was changing. What emerges is a damn excellent werewolf movie. While the sequel and prequel aren’t near as good as the original they still hold a spot with me. 7.28 Days Later(2002)
A powerful virus escapes from research facility in Britian.Transmitted in a drop of blood and devastating within seconds, the virus locks those infected into a permanent state of murderous rage.Within 28 days the country is on the brink of complete destruction as several survivors start their quest on securing a future for themselves. Technically its not considered a zombie movie but I like the premise and the cinematographry as well. 6.(tie)The Friday The 13th Franchise(1980)
Another classic horror franchise thats a must see. When you hear the word horror you immediately think Jason and/or Freddy adn thats why they are tied in the 6th slot. 6.(tie) A Nightmare On Elm Street Franchise(1984)
What really stands out to me about this franchise is Robert Englunds portrayal as Freddy Kreuger. One of the top franchises of the genre and deserves a spot in any top 10 list. 5.The Exorcist(1973)
You cannot call yourself a true horror fan if you haven’t seen this movie. This and the original Halloween are two must watch films. I was too chicken to watch this movie when I was younger and I’ve only watched all way through two times since. it’s down right terrifying and pulls out all the stops. 4.Halloween(1978)
This will always remain in my top list in some fashion. Joh Carpenter’s Halloween is a true gem in horror and a must watch for all horror fans. 3.Halloween(2007)
Rob Zombie’s reimagining of of John Carpenter’s 1978 Halloween. While many dismiss the film, but I like the changes that Zombie made. Tyler Mane as Micheal was a great choice, Michael is more imposing and just plain bad ass in this film. 2.The Devil’s Rejects(2005)
God Bless Rob Zombie!! Once my number one horror movie, only ousted by Planet Terror is a wonderful movie. It’s a sequel to the 2003 House of 1000 Corpses(written and directed by Zombie ). Taking place six months after the events of the first movie, sheriff John Quincy Wydell and a posse of troopers attack the Firefly’s family house. During the attack Otis and Baby escape and seek refuge and leave a path of destruction and murders in their wake. While House of 100 Corspes was more of a grotesque sort of horror,Rejects is gritty and realisitc which I love. 1.Grindhouse Presents: Plane Terror(2007)
Ahh Planet Terror! The newly crowned champ. I watched this movie last saturday and I fell in love immediately. I’ve watched it twelve times since and its still like I’m watching it for the first time. The second feature film in the Grindhouse package(the other being Death Proof) is filled with blood, guts, romance, and laugh out loud moments, the perfect blend that makes a stellar viewing experience. I have yet to watch Death Proof but if its as good as this then I’ll fall in love fast.
Honorable mentions go to Evil Dead.- its a a great movie and used to be in my top three. Really it should still be lol
The Childs Play Franchise
Jaws
if you know of any good paranormal type movies please leave me a comment as I’m always on the hunt for good horror movies.
Sweeney Todd Directed by Tim Burton Starring:Johnny Depp,Helena Bonham Carter,Alan Rickman,Timothy Spall,Sacha Baron Cohen Synopsis In a tale of maccabre revenge,Benjamin Barker(Depp),a skilled barber is unjustly charged and imprisoned by a priapic judge(Rickman). Review Tim Burton and Johnny Depp together once again in a film adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s musical of the same name. A big hit in the box office, most critics and the public, I thought I would have been blown away by this movie. The style, costumes, and set designs looked as if it was a combination of Beetlejuice and Edward Scissorhands(that’s not a bad thing). The story and acting were superb but the music ruined it for me. I knew it was going to be musical but wow was I surprised. I had to force myself from falling asleep. Without the musical parts this movie would be on my top 10 list, but as is it didn’t strike the right chords for me. Verdict:If you are a Depp or Burton fan and like Musicals-buy it but for me at best it’s aRENT!!! 3/5stars
The Mist Written and Directed By Frank Darabont Starring:Thomas Jane,Marcia Gay Harden,William Sadler,Laurie Holden SYNOPSIS: The night after a maleovent thunderstom,a strange thick mist envelops a small community.Unseen creatures begin attacking townsfolk who wonder out in the mist,David Drayton(Jane) and other members of the community barricade themselves in the local supermarket. REVIEW: Based on Stephen King’s 1980 Novella “The Mist”,Darabont’s adaptation really pulls out the stops and delivers a solid horro/scifi film.I loved the creature design in this movie, its liked they pulled the ugly nasties from my nightmares when I was a kid. The biggest dynamic is with the citizens that are holed up in the supermarket, personalities soon clash and the one that scared me the most was the religious nut played by Marcia Gay Harden.I was literally shouting in disgust when she was on the screen. The ending is different from the novella and boy it’s a huge twist. The Mist finally delivers a great ending that doesn’t pull any punches, while most people frown upon the ending I love it because its different then whats been shoved down out throats lately. Verdit:for the weary rent but for fans and horror buffs I say BUY!! 4/5stars
Mullberry Street Directed By Jim Mickle Starring:Vonia Arslanian,Kim Blair,Larry Fessenden, Adam Folk, Mike McGrath, Debbie Rochon, Lou Torres, Antone Pagan.
SYNOPSIS: An infection quickly spreads throughout Manhattan turning citizens into rat like creatures. Several apartment tenants must take a stand and protect themselves as the city devolves into madness.
REVIEW: Usually most of the 8 Films To Die For films are pretty decent but this one is atrocious. The make up and special effects are laughable especially when you see on of the creatures for the first time. While its a different take on the average zombie movie this movie stinks. VERDICT:Avoid At ALL Costs!! 2/5stars
Insomnia
Directed By Christopher Nolan
Starring: Al Pacino,Robin Williams,Hilary Swank SYNOPSIS:
a police officer investigating the murder of a 17 year old girl in Nightmute,Alaska, suffers from insomnia due to the constant daylight and guilt from current and past misgivings. REVIEW: A remake of the original Norweigan film,Christopher Nolan hit paydirt with this film.A superb cast and great script lead to a great viewing experience. Willimas and Pacino work well together and it shows but the shining star to me is Hilary Swank. VERDICT:BUY!!!4/5stars
SYNOPSIS:
Holden McNeil,a comic book artist falls for Alyssa Jones, also a comic book artist who is lesbian. REVIEW: A romantic comedy/drama written and directed by Kevin smith in 1997,Chasing Amy is without a doubt my favorite film out of the other Askewniverse films.I love all the little cameos that happen in this film and the other Kevin Smith films. It’s a love story laden with frank dialogue and sexual references and chocked full of humor, Everything I like in my movies. A must have for any Kevin Smith fan. VERDICT:BUY 5/5stars
For those that haven’t seen the movie here’s the Criterion Trailer for Chasing Amy:
SYNOPSIS: De Palma’s remake, of Howard Hawks’ Scarface(1932), chronicles the rise and fall of Tony Montana,a Cuban deportee, in Miami’s bustling cocaine business. REVIEW:
A true classic. scarface is part of our culture today and has been referenced in many movies, music videos and etc. With brutal violence and lack of positive attitude, some critics disliked the filmed.Al Pacino blew the roof off with his performance as Montana.Other noteworthy performances come from Steven Bauer, and Pfeiffer. One last note for those that have not seen the film,it’s certainly not recommended for kids, as the word fuck is used 226 times(credit imdb)and the strong violence.
Verdict:A great film through and through. A must BUY in my opinion. 5/5stars
I'm a writer at heart with artistic tendencies. In my writing,my nerves are calm and calculating, but when speaking the words fail to exit my mouth in an orderly fashion, often ending in embarrassing moments.
